How to Setup Outlook 2003 over HTTP for Windows XP

Overview

Customers with Windows XP can configure Outlook 2003 to connect to Frontgate over the Internet via an encrypted 128-bit SSL connection. Connecting using Remote Procedure Call (RPC) over HTTP allows Outlook 2003 to securely connect to the Frontgate Exchange system from behind a firewall. This is the preferred method since it does not require opening additional ports on your firewall.

Set Outlook 2003 over HTTP

1. Install the Microsoft XP Hot Fix (Q331320) for Outlook 2003.  If you are running Windows XP SP2 You may skip this step.

2. Download and install Microsoft Outlook 2003.  This download requires a password-Please refer to your Wecome Email for more information.

3. Create a new Outlook 2003 Profile:
    a) Go to Start and Control Panel
    b) Launch the “Mail” applet
    c) Click Show Profiles
    d) Add a new Profile
    e) In the Profile Name enter “Frontgate Exchange”

4. Hit next when prompted to add a new email account:

5. Choose Microsoft Exchange Server and hit Next:

6. Enter the server address ms12.mse7.exchange.ms along with the user name--This is usually the first part of your email address before the ‘@’ symbol.  Do Not hit Check Name at this time.

7. Hit the “More Settings” button. If you are behind a firewall or using a cable modem your window may hang for 60 seconds or more. Please be patient (even if it says "not responding") as the Outlook profile is trying to find a way to connect to the Frontgate system. After about 60 seconds it will time-out and return an error that says the “action could not be completed”.

This error is normal. Hit OK then you will see the following window:

Hit “Cancel” and then the “Microsoft Exchange Server” settings should appear. If they do not automatically appear, hit the “More Settings Button.”

8. You now should see the “Microsoft Exchange Server” settings as follows:

9. Go to the Security tab and change the “Logon Network Security” drop down to read Kerberos NTLM Password Authentication as follows:

10.  Next, click on the Connection tab and place a check next to "Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP" at the bottom of the window.  If you do not see this check box, please make sure you have installed the Hot Fix for Microsoft Windows XP in Step 1.

11. Click “Exchange Proxy Settings…” and enter the following:

a) Enter mail.mse7.exchange.ms in the "Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange" box.

b) Check the "Connect using SSL Only" box.

c) Make sure that “On fast Networks…” and “On slow Networks” are both checked.

d) For Proxy Authentication settings make sure NTLM Authentication is selected. Your window should look exactly like the one below:

12. Next hit OK on the Exchange Proxy Settings window, and OK again to complete the “Microsoft Exchange Server” window. You should now be back at the Email Accounts window as below. Make Sure "Use Cached Exchange Mode" is checked.

13. Hit the “Check Name” button and you should get a “connect to mail.mse7.exchange.ms” login box:

Enter your user name with MSE7\ in front of the user name as shown above. Normally your user name is the first part of your email address before the ‘@’ symbol but in some cases may be different. If you are unsure of your user name, ask your administrator or contact Frontgate Support.  Enter your password and click OK.

14. Your user name should resolve to your mailbox name and be “underlined” Hit Next and you should see the following congratulations window:

15. Set the new profile to either “Prompt” for a profile or to always use the “Frontgate Exchange” profile. This is personal choice. If you often switch profiles and want to be prompted for which Outlook profile to use, then choose the prompt option. If you wish to always use the Frontgate Exchange profile you created using this document then choose "Always use this profile." Click OK.

16. You should now be able to open Outlook 2003.

NOTE: It may take a few moments for Outlook to load the first time as it is setting up a local copy of the Inbox.

17. Modify your Windows HOSTS file using the related question below.  This will help optimize Outlook by reducing the time it takes to resolve host names and connect to the Exchange servers.

18. Update Outlook 2003 with the latest security updates here.
